   The Eye
The ability to see is dependent on the actions of several components in and around the eye.

When looking at an object, light rays are reflected from the object to the cornea. The lights rays are refracted and focused by the cornea and the lens. The lens allows the light rays to focus sharply on the retina, and results as an upside-down image. The retina then converts the light rays into electrical impulses which are transmitted through the optic nerve to the brain. The brain translates the image and the result is an image in the upright position.

The human eye is similar to a camera. A camera needs a lens to focus an image and film to produce an image. In that way, the eye needs a lens (cornea, lens) to refract and focus light and a film (retina) on which to focus the light rays. If any one or more of these components is not functions properly, the result is a poor image. The retina, representing the film in a camera, captures the image and sends the picture to the brain to be developed. The macula is the highly sensitive central area of our retina that is responsible for our central focusing vision. It is the most used part of the retina

MYOPIA:  Nearsightedness
Myopia, also known as nearsightedness is when the light entering the eye focuses in front of the retina rather than on the retina. Nearsighted people typically see well up close but poorly at a distance. This is caused by the eye being longer than a normal eye.

HYPEROPIA:  Farsightedness
Hyperopia, also known as farsightedness, is when the light entering the eye focuses behind the retina rather than on the retina. Farsighted people typically have difficulty seeing up close and at a distance. This is caused by the eye being shorter than a normal eye.

ASTIGMATISM:
Astigmatism is when the front surface of the eye called the cornea is oval like a football rather than spherical like basketball. The cornea has 2 points of focus, a steeper point and a flatter point that causes light to focus at one or more points onto the retina, resulting in blurry vision for distance and near.

ARMED FORCES TESTIMONIALS

Having the Custom Intralase procedure was worth every cent and an investment of a lifetime.  It's amazing to wake up every morning and be able to see everything without putting on my glasses.  Now that I have had the LASIK done, contacts won't be such a bother when deployed to foreign locations. Sand and dirt at high winds caused problems with my contacts in the past.  I don't have to worry about the problems that may occur in those situations.  Dr. Gupta and his staff were very professional and courteous, and I would highly recommend the Sugarbush Eye & Laser Centre to anyone who is thinking about refractive laser surgery.

My name is Sgt. Eric Stephens.  I am a Security Forces Craftsman in the USAF.  I received my procedure on October 4, 2007.  I could not be happier with the results and the improvement in my vision.  The deciding factor to get this procedure was the discount available to military members during September and October.  Having 20/15 vision will greatly improve my effectiveness at work by allowing me to observe the possible threats while performing surveillance, especially during inclement weather.  Another great benefit of not wearing glasses is during chemical warfare training.  Previously, I had to wear gas mask inserts which would fog up and were very uncomfortable.  My overall quality of life has increased and I have already recommended this procedure to several people I work with.

I have been wearing glasses for 13 years and they made it hard to play sports.  Since I joined the Air National Guard, I have been switching between glasses and contacts, but both were very unreliable.  When I had the surgery for my eyes, it was amazing.  I woke up and could see the alarm clock!  My eyes healed quickly after the surgery and it has been amazing.  I am a very active person and having the ability to go out and play sports or work around the house without having to worry about stuff getting in my contacts or fumbling for my glasses makes it all worth it.  I would recommend everyone who qualifies to get this surgery done at Sugarbush.

I am writing this testimonial to show my appreciation for the time and effort that Dr. Gupta and his staff at the Sugarbush Eye & Laser Centre have put toward correcting my vision. My name is Luke Hoffman.  I am a 23 year old veteran of OIF 2, a proud American, and for the past 10 years a prisoner to poor vision.  Working around and having poor eyesight up until now has been a terrible inconvenience and has truly confined my life to limited activities.  As a hunter and a sportsman, I've always kept my hobbies and activities to things involving the outdoors.  Hunting has always been a pain. Trying to sight a firearm, looking for deer through some distant brush, and even looking across a field have been limiting factors to these activities.  Even driving down an interstate, it's hard to read signs for exits and obey the speed limit changes because I could not read the sign until I was right up on top of them.  This is not only a pain, but very dangerous.  Since I have had the Intralase operation, my vision is phenomenal. Dr. Gupta and his amazing staff at Sugarbush have corrected my vision to a point better than perfect.  Only two days after the surgery I was seeing 20/15. This alone has amazed me. Everyday events have becaome less stressful.  Driving has become a contest between my passengers and I to see who can read the license plate first, and for once, I'm the one who wins.  Even the smallest most inert things in life have become a joy.  Sitting on my front porch swing and watching cars and people walk by with their dogs are enjoyable.  Noticing that I can count the number of leaves on a tree across the street and being able to enjoy the scenic overlooks for the reason they were built are just a few of the blessings that I have come to enjoy.  You've truly renewed the greatest gift in life...........the gift of sight.  I wish better vision to anyone who is deprived of it and would recommend having the operation.  It has changed my life beyond any amount of praise or gratitude; this gift is one that words cannot acknowledge.  I thank anyone who played even the smallest role towards my vision correction.

- Indebted for life, Luke Hoffman
